One of the first questions you need answers to when going on a self catering holiday is the availability of supermarkets, and Benidorm has a great selection including the popular local chain, Consum Supermarket. Another frequently asked question is which supermarket is the cheapest, and the answer to this, especially if you are a holidaymaker, is on an average shop there is not much difference between the main larger supermarkets. Some of the locals have worked out where their frequently bought products are cheaper and will do their weekly or monthly shop in a variety of supermarkets, as well as the street markets, especially when it comes to fresh local produce.
Being a Spanish retail chain, Consum’s shelf labelling is all in Spanish, except for their imported products which are individually labelled in their respective language, although the shelf label will still be in Spanish, e.g. Nescafe coffee is easily recognisable but will still be under the shelf label Café. I have found the staff at Consum are very polite and helpful but most have limited English so you may have to throw in some sign language, and being polite in return does wonders.
Consum Supermarket’s are well laid out and adapted for wheelchair use, have lockers for personal bags and an ample supply of wheeled shopping trolleys, although some of these are in need of replacement. Their fresh meat and fish counters offer a great variety that includes cured hams, sausages and cheese. The lovely seafood includes cooked prawns in the shell, great for a picnic on the beach. There is also a wide range of prepacked and frozen food stuff that includes ready meals. Their fresh fruit and veg includes some imported produce, and their bread, baguettes and rolls are baked in store daily.
There is an excellent range of tinned, bottled and dry goods, fruit juices, soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits. Household goods, cleaning products, pet food and beauty products are all available, and throughout the Consum supermarket range you will find both local and international brands, as well as a selection of lactose and gluten free products.
