Bodega Mendoza Wine Tour

The coastal city of Benidorm is renowned for its party atmosphere and excellent range of exciting activities but if you are looking for a more sedate and interesting activity, a Bodega Mendoza wine tour is just the thing. Spain's wine growing for the international market compared to that of France is still in its infancy, yet in recent years Spain has become the world's biggest exporter, and who would have thought the country's biggest buyer of wine is France! Most people would associate southern Spain's wine growing with the Jalon (Xaló) Valley or the towns of Jumilla and Yecla in the Murcia region, and certainly not Benidorm.

Well, wine lovers visiting Benidorm are in for a treat as, just a 10 minute drive from the city in the small town of l'Alfás del Pi is the family run Enrique Mendoza Winery. The winery was first established in the late 1970's when Enrique became interested in wines and started to make wine as a hobby for his family's consumption. The winery now produces an average of 300,000 bottles per year that are sold locally as well internationally. Indeed, they produce one of the top 10 wines in Spain called Santa Rosa Red. The grapes grown for their red wines come from their second vineyard in Villena, and the ones grown in l'Alfás del Pi are for moscatel.

Bodega Mendoza Wine Tour

Bodega Mendoza is set in beautiful gardens and all their grapes are grown organically using only compost without herbicides or insecticides. During the tour you will learn all about the intricate process of wine making and some fascinating facts about wine such as how the moon plays a part in growing the grapes and how they use the latest technology to monitor humidity, moisture and plant stress levels. You will get to see the bottling process and visit the cellars where you are shown the different woods used for the barrels that come from all over the world. On completion of the tour visitors will get to try 6 different wines accompanied by different tapas that compliment each wine such as cured ham, cheese and chocolate.
