Altea Tuesday Market
Just a short drive, or bike ride north of Benidorm lies the charming town of Altea, where day trippers can enjoy a great selection of activities and attractions that includes the vibrant and colourful Altea Tuesday Market. There are several excellent markets in and around Benidorm offering a variety of products from fresh fruit & veg to antique collectables. The largest market is held on Wednesday and Sunday mornings and is the best one for great value fresh produce. There is a daily indoor market with a mix of stalls, individual shops and cafe/bars, and if you’re a collector or antique dealer, don’t miss the El Cisne Flea Market held on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Altea Tuesday Market
Surprisingly, for the size of the town, the Altea Tuesday Market is one of the largest on the Costa Blanca and attracts many visitors from Benidorm and the other nearby towns and villages. Even if you are not a great fan of markets, Tuesday is a good time to visit Altea as its tapas bars and restaurants gear up for the crowds, adding a far wider choice to their usual menus. The fantastic range of goods on offer include tempting fresh local produce such as fruit, vegetables, various types of mushrooms, herbs, spices, pickles, preserves, a great selection of olives, olive oil, wonderful cheeses, fresh meat and fish, cured hams, sausages and delicious local sweets, cakes and pastries.
You will find some fine examples of Spanish pottery & ceramics from large terracotta outdoor pots to colourful and beautifully designed vases, cups and plates. Leather goods feature highly at the market, and unless you really need to have that fake designer label, go for the locally made leather items which are excellent quality and very reasonably priced. Clothing and accessory stalls are everywhere, as are electronic goods and mobile phone accessories. Not forgetting the young ones, all sorts of toys and Disney themed clothing can be found, as well as lovely sweets and chocolates.
Although there is a selection of snack and refreshment stalls at Altea Tuesday Market, most locals and visitors head down to the town’s main street after their shopping to sample the delights laid on in the restaurants and tapas bars. You can also make a full day of your visit by heading down to the lovely beach and marina where you can laze the day away or enjoy a selection of exciting water sports.
Getting to the Market
Altea is less than 30 minutes drive from Benidorm and it is possible to use the AP-7 motorway although there are tolls. The N-332 is just as quick and a more scenic route that offers a pleasant bicycle journey. Benidorm has an efficient and good value bus service and the number 10 bus runs to Altea every 15 minutes. It is always a good idea to arrive early to any market as car parks fill up quickly, as do the buses, so if you want to find a comfortable seat, don’t leave it until late morning.
